Trees
Trees are woody perennial plants with a single dominant trunk that supports a crown of branches and leaves, and they are grown mainly for the structure, shade and permanence they bring to a garden. Unlike shrubs, which branch from the base and stay lower, trees develop height over many seasons and eventually shape the whole planting around them. They are usually set in open ground, where roots have room to spread, although compact forms can live for a long time in large containers on a terrace. Trees serve as shelter, privacy screens, focal points, habitat for wildlife and, in some cases, sources of blossom, autumn colour or edible harvests.
