Informazioni principali
Description
Helleborus niger, also known as Christmas rose, flowers in winter and is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant. Fairly vigorous and luxuriant, first in cultivation but more so in the flowerbed. It likes cooler areas for summer cultivation, while in the garden it should be placed in shade or half-shade. Growth is initially slow and cultivation is long, at least a year, and in some cases even longer, up to two.
Origine e Storia
curiosity and special features
The common name 'Christmas Rose' is related to the flowering that occurs during the winter, close to the Christmas holidays, representing a symbol of light and rebirth.
Cut flowers also last well indoors.
Origin and Diffusion
A botanical species native to the central-northern Alps and Apennines where it can grow wild in the undergrowth of beech and pine forests.
Intensive genetic improvement work has led to a wide assortment of varieties and interspecific hybrids suitable both for use in the garden and as flowering pots.

Requireseast/south-east exposure, bright shade.
Ellebore is suitable in the garden for shady locations in summer and bright in winter, therefore ideal under deciduous trees.
Ideal climate and temperature
It requires a cool temperate climate. The ideal temperature is between 15 and 23 °C. The biological temperature is between 2 and 25 °C.
Use
Due to its flowering during the colder season, when others are absent, it is one of the most popular herbaceous species in
Outdoor ornamental
Hardiness
A plant of medium hardiness.
Soil/medium
It prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
For cultivation in pots, choose a new, specific, high-quality substrate containing peat and perlite.
Maintenance
It is on average difficult to cultivate.
cultivation tips
Some specific cultivation tips to achieve better vegetative development and a lush flowering:
Avoid over-watering Avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours Prefer shady locations in summer to avoid dry spells and high afternoon temperatures Prefers cool climate
Composition
Suitable both for creating uniform groups in purity as well as in composition with other ornamental grasses such as Primula denticulata, Primula x pubescens and Vinca by means of predefined design schemes prior to transplanting in relation to the colour shades of the blooms and the heights reached by each plant.
Cure e Avversità
planting
Apply an average density of 6 plants per square metre to ensure proper development of each specimen, resulting in a proportionate and compact final composition.
Remove the seedling from the container without damaging the roots and place it with the collar above the soil surface.
Irrigation
Assist the seedling in the early stages following transplanting by keeping the soil slightly moist but free of water saturation.
Afterwards, allow the soil to dry out a little between one watering and the next, preventing both stagnation and dryness. Avoid watering the aerial part of the plant in the evening to prevent the spread of phytopathologies.

It fears over-fertilisation, especially in conjunction with water stress.
As soon as it has finished flowering in the purchased pot, transplant it into the garden in lightly fertilised soil, but without over-fertilising and making sure to avoid a return of intense cold, below -4/5°C.

Consigli dell'esperto
advise 1
In order to achieve abundant flowering in the garden, the Ellboro or Christmas Rose should get direct sun during the flowering months, while in order for the foliage to grow well, it should be well sheltered from the sun as early as mid-spring and throughout the summer until autumn. Transplant them in the garden in lightly fertilised soil, without overdoing it as soon as the purchased pots have finished flowering, making sure to avoid strong cold returns, below minus 4-5°C.
